Breki starts on redfish

New VinnslustÜðin trawler Breki has begun fishing on redfish south of the Westmann Islands as the crew get to grips with the new vessel´s systems.

Breki its sister vessel, Gunnvör’s new Páll Pálsson, are designed by Skipasýn and were delivered earlier this year from China after some extended delays and a long delivery trip. After reaching Iceland, both vessels’ catch handling systems were still to be fitted.

According to Breki’s skipper Magnús Ríkharðsson, the first trip began with a couple of hauls of redfish, while much of the trip went into fine-tuning the winches and the catch-handling gear.

Breki sailed on Tuesday with a couple of extra hands on board, technicians from the winch and catch-handling equipment suppliers who were there to monitor all the systems on board and make adjustments as required. Then there was a brief call in port to put the technicians ashore before leaving again for a proper trip, this time with VinnslustÜðin (VSV) demersal divison manager Sverrir Haraldsson on board for the first full trip.

‘We’re just happy to be fishing. We can expect to be still fine-tuning much of the equipment on board, but that’s what we had expected,’ Magnús Ríkharðsson said.

‘It all looks good,’ he added
