Trawler crewmen under investigation

Icelandic police yesterday arrested two of the crew of a Greenlandic trawler, and according to subsequent reports, a third crewman has also been arrested in connection with the disappearance of a young woman in Reykjavík at the weekend.

The 21-year-old woman was last seen it the early hours of Saturday morning in Reykjavík and a search found a pair of boots believed to be hers near the harbour in Hafnarfjörður.

A squad of police officers travelled to the trawler 90 nautical miles offshore by helicopter in an operation involving Danish naval vessel Triton. Trawler Polar Nanoq has since returned to port in Hafnarfjörður, accompanied by the Danish naval vessel.

Two of the trawler’s crew were arrested on board the trawler, suspected of having knowledge in connection with the young woman’s disappearance on Saturday. A third man was arrested on board yesterday evening. According to sources in Iceland, the men have declined to say anything. They can expect to be questioned today now that the trawler has docked in Hafnarfjörður. The first two men arrested can be held for questioning for 24 hours and will have to be released at midday today. The third man’s 24 hours expire this evening. In all these cases the police can seek custody to hold them for a longer period.

A police forensic team has been at work on board the trawler during the night.
