The new pelagic trawler to be built by Havyard for France Pélagique is to be fitted out with a catch handling system supplied by Icelandic company Skaginn 3X.

Skaginn 3X has extensive experience of pelagic processing systems ashore and at sea, and has equipped a number of exceptionally high-capacity shore-based plants in Iceland and the Faroe Islands in recent years, including the Eskja factory at Eskifjörður in eastern Iceland that was commissioned at the end of last year.

Skaginn 3X will equip the new France Pélagique pelagic trawler with a complete system for sorting by species, grading, packing, freezing and palletising the new trawler’s catches.

Speaking at this week’s Brussels Seafood Expo, Jón Birgir Gunnarsson of Skaginn 3X commented that the order for this sophisticated factory deck is due to the company’s success in achieving unparalleled throughput levels.

‘This exceptionally high output is combined with advanced technology including visions systems that inspect and identify each fish,’ he said, adding that Skaginn 3X has been very successful in developing these systems for shore-based production, and this latest task centres around adapting this vision technology for sorting and grading at sea, alongside packing and palletising several products simultaneously.
