Season ready to start

HB Grandi’s freezer trawler Örfirisey is now fishing in the Norwegian zone of the Barents Sea, and according to skipper Ævar Jóhannesson, they started fishing on 6th January after a four days’ steaming from Iceland.
Fishing got off to a decent start near Bear Island, but has been less since a spell of heavy weather passed over the area.
‘The weather has been making life difficult for us these last few days, and we have across a wide area and have been searching for fish all over,’ Ævar Jóhannesson said, and added that last week Örfirisey was along with four other trawlers – from Greenland, the UK and two from the Faroes – north-east of the Tor Iversen Bank where the weather outlook for the next few days is good.
‘I’m certain that the season is just about to start. There’s large, beautiful cod that’s full of roe here and there’s definitely some good fishing ahead of us,’ he said.
Ævars Jóhannesson and Örfirisey’s crew are familiar with fishing in the Barents Sea, although this time they will be fishing only in Norwegian waters. Örfirisey has a green weight quota of 1200 tonnes of cod and the trip is expected to last 40 days.
