MSC certification for Atlanto-Scandian herring renewed

The certification renewal by the Marine Stewardship Council of Atlanto-Scandian herring has been confirmed.

Auditing body DNV GL, along with MEC and Acoura, carried out the certification to check that Atlanto-Scandian herring continues to reach the standards required, and these bodies have confirmed that under certain conditions, the standard continues to apply.

‘It’s satisfying to know that the uncertainty we have experienced for some time has now been brought to an end, and the markets can continue to trade in Atlanto-Scandian herring in the knowledge that it is certified,, said Kjel Ingebrigtsen at Norges Fiskarlag.

He commented that all major Norwegian fisheries are certified to the MSC standard, accounting for around 90% of Norwegian seafood exports, and this internationally-recognised confirmation of sustainable management is important for the fishing industry.

The MSC certification sets out a number of requirements regarding how stocks are managed, exploited and exported. Norges Fiskarlag is responsible for certification of fisheries in Norway, along with Norges Sildgesalgslag and the Norwegian Seafood Council.
