Heavy fishing on blue whiting in Icelandic EEZ

One of Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessels yesterday docked in Neskaupstaður with 2200 tonnes of blue whiting on board, most of it caught in Icelandic waters.

According to Börkur’sskipper Hjörvar Hjálmarsson, the blue whiting in this trip were large and good quality fish.

‘We started searching in the Rose Garden, and spent two days there without much success. From there we crossed over into Faroese waters where there had been some fishing,’ he said.

‘There wasn’t much to be had there, so we went back to the Icelandic zone and searched further north. We found the blue whiting north-east of the Red Square grounds, around a hundred nautical miles off Norðfjarðarhorn. We had most of our catch there in three and a half days,’ he said.

As soon as the catch from this eight-day trip had been landed, Börkur left for the same fishing grounds again.
