Catches up, tension down

A Murmansk trawler has switched to using a pair of Polar Fishing Gear’s Hercules trawl doors with good results.

‘Good catching doors,’ said Vladimir, Krym’s skipper. ‘Easy to shoot and good to tow.’

Krym was originally Icelandic trawler Bliki, before being sold to Norway and then to Russia.

According to Atli Jósafatsson of Polar Fishing Gear, Krym has seen good results with these 2100kg high-efficiency 6 square metre doors.

‘These semi-pelagic doors spread a 400 mesh bottom trawl with a 130 metre bridles to give a 130 metre spread between the doors,’ he said.

He added that these are low aspect ratio doors that fly just clear of the seabed, and since switching from a 5 square metre pair of older doors, Krym’s catches have increased by 20%.

‘The efficiency is not just in the cacth,’ he added. ‘Warp tensions have gone from between 5 and 6 tonnes with the older doors to between 4 and 5 tonnes with the Hercules doors.’
