The Russian fleet’s capelin catch has reached more than 6000 tonnes, according to Petr Savchuk, deputy head of the Federal Fisheries Agency.

The 6194 tonnes reported so far have been caught mainly by Kapitan Nazin and Kapitan Demidenko, both of which are operated by Murmansk Trawl Fleet, although so far there are sixteen vessels from thirteen companies hunting for capelin in the Barents Sea.

According to reports from research organisation PINRO, the capelin marks are expected to tighten in the coming few days as the fish migrate out of overwintering areas.

Petr Savchuk said that hopes are tied to the research vessel which is there to monitor the movement of capelin, and to direct fishing vessels to the right areas.
