Shetland pelagic vessel Serene christened

A celebration took place at the weekend at Karstensen in Skagen to mark the completion of the yard’s latest newbuild, an 82 metre LOA, 17.20 metre beam pelagic vessel for the Serene Fishing Company in Shetland.

The new Serene is the latest in a series of pelagic boats to carry the name that goes back to a partnership formed in 1969 and headed by the legendary Magnus ‚ÄėMackie‚Äô Polson. The partnership has had several newbuildings in 1995 and 1998, and the previous Serene, built in 2009, was sold to Henning Veibust in Norway following the decision to order this new vessel. The order for the new Serene was signed at the Skipper Expo in Aberdeen in 2016.

Serene is the yard’s newbuild #441, built to a Karstensen design and completed on a hull built at the Nauta yard in Poland. The design is optimised for efficient working, safety and comfort, as well as for optimum efficiency on catch handling and storage, and fuel consumption.

The main engine is a MAN 12VL32/44 CR, and this is the first slow revving main engine to be fitted to a vessel in Shetland/Scottish fleet with common rail fuel injection system. The Scana Volda propeller design is optimised to the specific service profile of the vessel, with rpm’s between 110 and 135 and is designed to ensure optimum bollard pull for trawling, as well as good free-sailing characteristics.

MAN also supplied the two heavy-duty main auxiliaries, each unit driven by a MAN 6L21/31 engine. There are also 125kW and 250kW harbour- and emergency gensets.

Brunvoll supplied thrusters, Johnson Controls supplied the RSW plant and the vacuum system is from Iras.

Karm√ły Winch supplied the full deck machinery package, including heavyweight 90-tonne trawl winches and 110-tonne net drums.
