Norwegian design and build for Southern Ocean catcher

Naval architect Skipstkompetanse and M√•l√ły shipyard B√•tbygg have contracted to build an innovative multi-purpose fishing vessel for Australian operator Austral Fisheries.

The new Cape Arkona will be built at the B√•tbygg yard, continuing a long association between the yard and the Australian fishing company, which a couple of years ago saw the Norwegian pelagic vessel √ėsterbris extensively refitted to become trawler/longliner Atlas Cove.

Cape Arkona will be built to a Skipskompetanse SK-42560 design, and will measure 66.90 metres with a 15 metre beam. A minimal environmental footprint is high on the list of priorities when it came to designing the new vessel, which will be have a unique capability to alternate trawling, longlining and netting, and to have capacity to carry gear for all three types of fishing so that it can switch easily between methods without having to interrupt a trip to make the changeover.

Cape Arkona is designed to carry a crew of 40 in 26 cabins.
