Shrimp trawler order for Karstensen

After fifty years with its current owners, a Danish trawler is soon to be replaced by a new vessel ordered from the Karstensens yard in Skagen for the partnership of Thomas Hjort Samuelsen and Karl Arne Nielsen. The new trawler is scheduled to be delivered in June 2020.

Fishing company North Sea has operated its trawler North Sea S-255 since 1968 when the company was established by Leif Steffensen, who ran it for most of the intervening years. In 2007 Thomas Hjort Samuelsen and Karl Arne Nielsen bought into the company and in 2104 they were able to take over the entire ownership between them.

There has been a long discussion over the options of building a new vessel, and now a contract has been signed for new 32 metre overall by 10 metre breadth shrimp trawler, to be built at Karstensen’s yard in Poland and completed by the Skagen yard.

The design process has been a close collaboration between the yard and the owners, and the new vessel will feature the latest in fishing and catch handling technology. The resulting design is tailored to the customers’ requirements, with a heavy focus on optimum working conditions and space for handling trawl gear.

Thomas Hjort Samuelsen and Karl Arne Nielsen are no strangers to the Karstensen yard, which extensively modernised the current North Sea in 2008.

The Karstensens yard currently has 14 fishing vessels on its orderbook for delivery over the next two years, including two shrimp trawlers for the local fleet in Skagen.
